About N&PSGFC
Newcastle & Port Stephens Game Fish Club was formed in 1929. It is the birthplace of Game Fishing in Australia where in 1913, Dr Mark Lidwell caught the worlds first black marlin on rod and reel off Port Stephens, the skeleton still remains on display at the Australian Museum. Our Registered Clubhouse is situated on Shoal Bay Beach at the picturesque Port Stephens and has facilities for around 120 people. We have our own Billfish Bistro which is open daily for lunch and dinner, keno, ATM, icy cold beer on tap, and gaming facilities. Our Clubhouse also has its own weighstation, which allows temporary mooring of several boats. Fishing Membership is generally around 550 people, with some 80 or so boats of varying sizes between 17' and 65' being registered with the Club. We also have a Social Membership of 3000.
Our members come from very diverse sections of the community, with many of them, who are either owners of Businesses, or holding very senior postions in companies both large and small.
We always try to encourage a family atmosphere at our club, and hold many social functions for our members to enjoy the fantastic facilities available.
The Club is a member of the New South Wales Game Fishing Association, and competitions are held against other clubs in our zone (Northern Zone) and around the state. We regularly send a team of 50 or more N&PSGFC boats to participate in the NSWGFA Interclub competition held annually at Port Stephens it is also biggest Game Fishing Tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, which we are the host club. Around 220 boats and approximately 1000 Anglers participate overall.
N&PSGFC members are regularly major trophy winners on the 'Tournament Circuit', and as a result the Club has been very successful. N&PSGFC have taken out Champion Team Tag & Release, two years runnings (2006 & 2007), a most prestigious award for any NSW Club. We have also in recent years been awarded the trophy for Tag & Release Champion Club in the Game Fishing Association of Australia.
In the recent history of Game Fishing there has been a transition from capturing and weighing of fish towards tag & release. This is notably increasing every year with over 95% of all fish recorded being tagged & relelased.
